We all miss Dave. He was perhaps the quirkiest, most enthusiastic musician I've played with. He was also the most inimitable, complicated friend I've known. Most people who knew him would say the same, as would huge assortment of friends, loving family, fans, antagonists, girlfriends, ex-girlfriends, colleagues, and befuddled casual aquaintences. He was a tremendously prolific and exciting song-writer. I had the pleasure of recording with Dave in the early part of 2003. I compiled most of the tracks posthumously and collected them in the album "Hello Goodbye". This album represents the last recorded output of an astonishingly proliferate writing career.
Most of these songs were tunes that Dave had been kicking around in the last couple of years and some were collaborations written on the spot. They were recorded into my Mac G5 and bounced to disk in stereo. Dave played most all of the acoustic guitars and sang. He also played bass and electric guitar on "Humma Summa". I did most of the electric and some of the acoustic and also played bass. I did the arranging, engineering and did the drum loops and percussion and the keys and sang backup. It was a blast! Kortney Leatherwood played drums and sang backup on "There's Love and There's War". Tara Der-Yeghiayan played guitar on "Closer to Finished" and sang backup on "Detrimental Desire".
I lament greatly that Dave never got to listen to most of the final tracks, and I worry incessantly that they don't live up to his stripped-raw grunge aesthetic. He always viewed me suspiciously as the "sell-out, big-production guy" (guilty). But he did get to hear "Closer To Finished" in it's final state; he seemed genuinely enthused by it. In particular he made me play it about 30 times in a row so he could luxuriate in the trippy synth solo. I know Dave enjoyed recording these parts, and I loved putting it all together. I hope that's the take-away when you listen to these tracks.
One final note: upon re-visiting the archives of this project, there are still some tracks that could be hammered into art. I'd love to open it to collaboration with Dave's expansive music & social network. If you're interested, you'll know what to do. We all have Dropbox now, yeah?
